Statement of Intent

My work is primarily abstract, representing thoughts, emotions and experiences that I have encountered. While the images are deeply personal to me, I don’t have an agenda for how my viewers perceive the work.

I want my audience to first find my images to be aesthetically beautiful, and then find something of themselves within it. Whether it be a layered image, or an out of focus splotch of color, I want them to first have an emotional response to the work, and then discover the complexities associated with their reaction.

As humans we bring individual differences to the experience of art. Imagery is subjective, and its effect is defined by recipient and their perspective, not by the artist. The agenda of the artist is irrelevant.

By working abstractly I can push this idea of individual effect further than if I were to use a subjective image. By not presenting a defined subject, I force the viewer to develop their own interpretation.

Short Bio
Mallory Qualls is a Salt Lake City native and has recently completed her BFA in Fine Art Photography at the University of Utah. While earning her degree, she co-founded the Utah Photographic Arts Council, and served as Vice President for the Student Advisory Council. During her time spent in student government she participated in the creation of 6 exhibitions. She has displayed work throughout the Salt Lake City Area and was awarded "Best in Show" in the 2009 Graduating Senior Show.
